Royer Labs R-12 Ribbon Microphone Review

Royer’s entry point into its active ribbon line puts the R-121’s element in a sub-$1,000 body, adds a pad and a bass cut, and gives you enough output for any interface.

Every Royer Labs story starts with the R-121. David Royer built his first ribbon mic in his garage in 1997, and Royer Labs opened in May 1998 with the aim of bringing ribbons back into mainstream recording. Understand, that ribbon mics were a largely forgotten technology at that time. The R-121 showed they belonged in modern sessions and could still be improved, helped by rare-earth magnets and Royer’s offset-ribbon motor. The R-122 followed in 2002, and Royer bills it as the world’s first phantom-powered active ribbon. The Recording Academy gave the company a Technical GRAMMY in 2013. The R-122 MKII followed in 2015 and added a pad and a bass cut.

With prices above what a typical studio owner could afford, Royer decided to chase a new market with a lower price. The R-101 came first (now discontinued) and the passive R-10 followed in 2017. It reached its price by pairing globally sourced parts, chiefly the body, with modern design methods.

Royer unveiled the R-12 in the summer of 2025, at $899 for a single mic and $1849 for a matched pair. John Jennings, then Royer’s president, said the R-12 grew out of the passive R-10 and uses active circuitry derived from Royer’s pricier models. Royer’s manual calls it an all-new design that borrows from the classics, with electronics updated using current surface-mount technology. That detail is telling, since the R-122 MKII’s electronics are hand-wired in Burbank. Surface-mount assembly is how the R-12 reaches its lower price point.

The bigger shakeup since launch happened in the front office. Less than a year after the R-12 arrived, Royer was sold to Sounds Great Holdings, a newly formed pro audio investment company, and Joe Covey took over as CEO. The workshop stays in Burbank, Dave Hetrick has stepped in as president and chief revenue officer, and co-founder John Jennings, who introduced the R-12 at launch, is now described only as former president, with no new title announced. The new owners say they plan to grow Royer’s global sales and invest in product development. We used three different studio engineers to evaluate the R-12, their impressions in quotes below.

The R-12 uses the same 2.5-micron, direct-corrugated aluminum ribbon as the R-121. The element measures 1.5 inches by 3/16 inch and sits offset in Royer’s patented Flux-Frame transducer. It is protected by a multi-layer stainless steel and synthetic screen with an internal baffle and damper. The magnets are grade 52 neodymium, and the transducer is shock-mounted inside the body. The offset is classic Royer thinking: placing the ribbon toward the front of the gap gives it the latitude to swing rearward under heavy pressure without damage. The output transformer shares its core design with those in the R-10 and R-121 but has its own winding.

What’s interesting is that in Royer’s active designs, the circuit doesn’t actually amplify. A transformer with far more voltage step-up than a passive mic could utilize supplies the extra level, and a buffer after it drives the cable. Royer’s Rick Perrotta is on record stating that the reason this design was employed was to combat noise. A common bipolar transistor layout was ruled out because it would pulse voltage into the ribbon whenever phantom power came on. A DC voltage pulse sent through a ribbon element causes electrical current to pass directly through the ultra-thin aluminum foil. Because the ribbon has minimal mass and high sensitivity to physical force, this sudden electrical or thermal jolt stresses the material. Even worse, repeated voltage surges from engaging phantom power with an improperly isolated circuit cause the delicate metal to stretch over time. This continuous micro-stress flattens and relaxes the corrugations, the accordion-like pleats that provide the ribbon’s suspension and elasticity, leading to permanent ribbon sag, loss of output, and mechanical noise issues. Royer’s unique approach resulted in a sensitivity of 16 mV/Pa, or -36 dBV. Self-noise is below 16 dB, the balanced 200 ohm output wants a load of at least 1 k ohm, and the mic draws only 4 mA of 48 V phantom power.

Two recessed switches on the back engage a -15 dB pad and a 100 Hz bass cut with a gentle 6 dB per octave slope. Royer rates the response at 30 Hz to 15 kHz within 3 dB, and maximum SPL at over 160 dB at 1 kHz and over 135 dB at 30 Hz. Those two SPL figures describe two frequencies, not two switch positions. The passive R-10, which has no pad at all, carries the same kind of rating: 160 dB at 1 kHz and 135 dB at 50 Hz. The lower number reflects the fact that a ribbon moves much farther at low frequencies for the same sound pressure.

The body is 8 1/4 inches long including the mount and 1 3/8 inches in diameter, and it weighs 462 grams, nearly twice the 244 grams of an R-121, which makes it the largest mic in the R-series. Apart from the extra length, a black badge and the switch slots, it looks just like the R-10. The finish is a non-reflective matte epoxy, and the kit includes a swivel mount, a protective sock and a carrying case, which is a small plastic briefcase. There is no shockmount and no stereo bar, even with a pair. The warranty runs ten years. The first re-ribbon is free within a year of purchase, or within five years if you register the mic in its first year.

The Coles is the BBC’s 1950s design, first built by STC, with production passing to Coles in 1972. It was employed as drum overheads on many landmark Beatles and Led Zeppelin records. It is passive, rated at -65 dB re 1 V/Pa, and weighs 1.08 kilograms in a body measuring 197 by 83 by 61 millimeters, with distortion specified at under 1 percent at 125 dB SPL. It retails for $1,762.

The R84 began in 2000 as AEA’s lighter, cheaper version of the eight-pound RCA 44BX, and it ended up weighing in at three pounds. Its 2.35-inch, 1.8-micron ribbon is rated above 165 dB SPL. Sensitivity is -52 dBV/Pa into an unloaded input, output impedance is 270 ohms, and AEA recommends a load of 1.2 k ohms or more. AEA prices the R84 series from $1,299 to $1,599, a range that covers both the passive R84 and the active R84A.

The first advantage is arithmetic. At -36 dBV/Pa, the R-12 is 16 dB hotter than the passive R84’s unloaded figure and 29 dB hotter than the Coles. On a cranked amp that hardly matters. On a fingerpicked acoustic or a soft vocal, it’s the difference between a preamp running comfortably and one turned all the way up and hissing away like an angry cobra. AEA says the passive R84 needs at least 60 dB of gain from a high-impedance preamp, and it points anyone without a dedicated ribbon preamp toward the R84A. That active model is specified at -44 dBV/Pa, still 8 dB below the R-12.

The second half of the story is impedance. Because the buffer isolates the ribbon, the R-12 is largely unaffected by a preamp’s input impedance, and Royer says it works well plugged straight into a computer interface with phantom power. A passive ribbon’s tone and level change with the load it receives, but with the Royer R-12’s that’s not the case. The Coles also uses its own connector, and whether an XLR adapter comes in the box depends on the dealer.

The R-12 has controls its rivals lack. Neither the Coles nor the R84 has a pad or a filter, so proximity effect and headroom must be handled further down the chain. We found the R-12’s filter to be so effective on close-mic’d sources that it “kicks a** on vocals and acoustic guitar.”

The R-12 also wins on toughness and is “built for rough use.” Royer calls the R-12 and R-10 its most shock-tolerant models, and a 160 dB rating is far above the Coles’s 125 dB distortion spec. Of course, no ribbon is invincible. AEA warns that sudden gusts and heavy low-frequency blasts from kick drums or bass cabinets can stretch an R84’s ribbon. Fact is, and this goes for all ribbon mics, if you can feel air pressure at the microphone’s location, the ribbon shouldn’t be placed there.

At 462 grams, the R-12 weighs less than half as much as the Coles and about a third as much as the R84 with its attached cable. Its slim body fits between toms or close to a speaker grille where the bulky Coles gets awkward. At its MSRP, the R-12 undercuts the cheapest R84 series model by $350 or more and the Coles by more than $800.

This goes for all ribbon mics, if you can feel air pressure at the microphone’s location, the ribbon shouldn’t be placed there…

While none of this makes the R-12 the better-sounding microphone. We can tell you that our reviewers found it to be noticeably brighter than a Coles 4038, which is a plus or a minus depending on what you want from a ribbon. Compared to the R-12, the AEA’s R84 has a smoother, rolled-off top, and a pronounced midrange. In addition, its front and back sound slightly different because the rear has two layers of grille cloth as opposed to the single on the front.

The first impression of the R-12 is that Royer has resisted the temptation to go beyond the brand’s design language. It is essentially a refined R-10, with a longer body, black branding and recessed controls on the rear. This is a microphone “designed around its transducer” rather than around visual novelty.

The “build quality is excellent.” The “body feels substantial” without becoming unbalanced, and the internal shock mounting is more than just a marketing gimmick. Royer’s own documentation identifies the R-10 and R-12 as its most shock and vibration tolerant models, while the built in windscreen provides another layer of protection for an inherently delicate transducer. That protection is especially valuable because the R-12 is marketed for close use on loud sources as well as for vocals and acoustic instruments.

Yet the R-12 is not indestructible, and some of the language surrounding modern ribbon microphones can encourage the wrong impression. Royer-s 160 dB specification concerns sound pressure at 1 kHz. It does not mean the ribbon can be subjected to arbitrary air blasts without consequence. Royer explicitly warns that direct blasts of air remain hazardous and recommends additional pop or wind protection for close vocals, percussion and wind instruments. The company also advises protecting the microphone when it is transported and minimizing exposure to strong air movement. The practical rule is simple: use the pad for loud amps, close brass and anything near a kick drum, and leave it off for everything else.

From a technical standpoint, the active design is the R-12’s greatest practical success. Passive ribbons can sound dramatically different depending on the impedance and gain characteristics of the preamp. That variability can be useful to an experienced engineer, but it can also be an unnecessary complication, particularly when a microphone is being used through an interface preamp in a project studio. Royer eliminates much of that problem in the R-12, presenting a stable 200 ohm balanced output and is rated for a minimum 1 kOhm load. Royer explicitly states that it can work well with moderate preamps and interface inputs, however our evaluators found its behavior largely indifferent to preamp input impedance.

The result is a ribbon microphone that behaves less like a finicky microphone and more like a modern studio tool. With 16 mV/Pa sensitivity, it is not remotely in the low output category associated with old ribbon microphones. Our reviewers found that even relatively quiet sources produced comfortable recording levels and measured the microphone as “exceptionally quiet” for an active ribbon.

Effects ended up being the most divisive area for our evaluators. Pad FX are held down like Teenage Engineering’s punch-ins and respond to velocity and aftertouch, which makes them great for live performance. Knob FX apply a single processor to chosen pads, covering delays, reverbs, filters, compressors, limiters, amp simulation and vinyl and tape emulation. Flex Beat handles DJ-style rhythmic mangling, beat chops, gates and reverses. All of it sounds good, but the frustration is in the plumbing. Akai’s FAQ states that effect adjustments can be recorded into a sequence, while the live, momentary Pad-FX performance is a more limited affair. The result is that the effects feel more like performance tools and resampling sources than fully automated insert effects.

The frequency response is provocative because the R-12 is not voiced as an artificially bright modern ribbon. Royer specifies 30 Hz to 15 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB, and our testing found a smooth response with a controlled upper range rather than the conspicuous high frequency lift associated with some contemporary ribbon designs. One tester described the R-12 as “brighter than the Coles 4038, but not as airy as the R-121.” Another evaluator similarly found the R-12 “slightly more controlled in the upper range than the R-10” and but “less open than the R-121.”

The R-12 has enough high frequency information to preserve detail, but “it does not chase the illusion of condenser brightness.” Interestingly, one of the R-12’s superpowers is on electric guitar amps. The microphone “captures the body and density of amplifiers while retaining a halo of high frequency detail without harshness.” Even more fascinating is that one reviewer found the R-12 “especially effective on distorted electric guitar” and capable of “producing a complete guitar sound with one microphone.”

A more standard approach to ribbon usage was the R-12 on vocals. The “R-12 is particularly convincing on vocals” because the ribbon characteristics provide a natural smoothing effect without reducing the signal to a dark, indistinct mass. That is where the high pass filter becomes much more powerful. A figure 8 ribbon placed close to a vocalist produces substantial proximity effect. The fixed 100 Hz filter at 6 dB per octave gives the engineer an immediate way to control that low frequency buildup before it enters the recording chain. “The filter is exceptionally useful on close sources” and “with the high pass filter engaged, it could be my favorite Royer for vocals.”

The -15 dB pad is another one of the Royer’s superpowers. It gives the R-12 enough control to move between quiet sources and loud guitar cabinets, drums and brass without forcing the user to alter the rest of the gain structure. Royer places the attenuation ahead of the microphone’s active electronics, allowing the microphone to “maintain substantial headroom on very loud material.” This is one reason the R-12 makes more sense as an all purpose microphone than a passive ribbon whose optimum use case may be dictated by its output level.

The figure 8 pattern also deserves attention, according to our reviewers. In addition to the familiar front and rear pickup, the side nulls can be extremely useful for managing spill. Our evaluators found the rejection in those areas to be “substantial.” There is also a tonal difference between the front and rear sides because of the offset ribbon design, which “allows more options when recording.” Our reviewer who tested the R-12 on shakers found the rear to be “more rounded and softer at the top end,” allowing for a “fuller soundstage when panning individual performances hard left and right.” That effectively gives the engineer two nearby tonal starting points.

It does not feel like an inexpensive version of an expensive product. It feels like a deliberately engineered microphone that happens to inherit technology from Royer’s more expensive models.

Conclusion

The Royer Labs’ R-12 really nails it on an unusually strong combination of sound quality, engineering, flexibility, durability and price. While the R-12’s improvements over the R-10 are more functional than transformational, and Royer left useful accessories and additional filter flexibility on the table, among modern active ribbon microphones, the R-12 is one of the most complete and rationally designed packages available at its price. Highly Recommended.

The Future: For the next incarnation of the R-12, Royer should keep the existing ribbon action and active transformer architecture while adding a purpose built external shockmount, a stereo bar with the matched pair, a second selectable high pass frequency and more comprehensive protection against wind and handling during live use. I would also like to see Royer explore a carefully engineered selectable voicing system that provides a second low frequency or presence option without compromising the microphone’s passive acoustic character, along with clearer technical documentation explaining exactly how the active circuit and transformer interact. That would preserve what is already excellent about the R 12 while addressing the few areas where the microphone still feels deliberately cost constrained rather than fully realized.

Off The Record: The R 12 is probably the smarter microphone for most people, but the R-121 is still the one I’d reach for when I specifically want the R-121 sound. They share Royer’s 2.5 micron ribbon technology and there is a family resemblance, but I would not buy an R-12 expecting it to simply replace an R 121. The 121 has that slightly more open, immediate quality up top and a particular midrange authority that makes it exceptionally easy to place in a mix. The 12 is a little more controlled and somewhat less forward, which can actually be an advantage on sources that already have plenty of bite. Put them on a loud guitar cabinet and both will give you the familiar Royer smoothness, but the 121 tends to give you a little more of the finished record before you touch an EQ.

Not this may be a tad controversial, but the 12 is arguably the more practical engineering instrument. The active output means you don’t have to worry nearly as much about whether you’re feeding it from a really good ribbon preamp or the microphone input on a modern interface, and the pad and high pass filter are truly useful rather than marketing propganda. That’s a big deal when you want to work fast. On vocals, guitars, brass, drums or anything where proximity effect can get out of hand, the 12 gives you more control at the microphone. The 121 is simpler, and I actually like that simplicity. You put it up, get the placement right, and it tends to tell you exactly why you bought a Royer in the first place. For somebody who already owns a good preamp and understands passive ribbons, the 121 remains a beautiful, straightforward tool. For somebody who wants one ribbon that is easier to live with across a lot of sessions, I’d take the 12.
