Baby Audio has released SubCulture, a new bass enhancement plug-in for Mac and PC. Built to augment the low frequency content of any monophonic input, SubCulture lets producers build deep and powerful bass lines from virtually any source. SubCulture automatically detects the pitch of incoming audio and locks its bass enhancement engines to each note, providing musical low end extension that claims to always stay in tune with the source signal.
So where did Baby Audio get the inspiration for SubCulture? According to Baby’s CEO, Caspar Bock Soerensen, “We researched some new technologies for real-time audio layering and had all kinds of ideas for how to use them, starting with drum layering. But pretty soon we realized that the best product idea for this technology was subharmonics and building on top of the concept we had already released with Bass XXL in 2023 by our second brand Denise Audio.”

Unlike psychoacoustic or synthesis-based approaches, SubCulture’s enhanced material is always derived directly from the input signal, ensuring it blends musically with the original to reinforce the low end. With three distinct bass enhancement processors and a suite of flexible shaping tools, SubCulture gives producers everything they need to achieve the commanding low end required for modern mixes.
SubCulture comes equipped with all the tools to craft a polished, mix-ready bass sound. At its core are the three bass enhancement engines: Sub Layer, Root Boost and Resonance. Sub Layer adds a pitch-shifted sub-octave version of the input signal at up to two octaves below the original. Root Boost is a pitch-tracking EQ band that provides up to 18 dB of boost or cut at the fundamental frequency of each incoming note. Resonance is a parallel filter network inspired by classic analog designs. Optimized to work together in complementary dimensions, each processor plays a role to reinforce, enhance and extend the critical low frequency material in the signal.
Baby Audio did have to overcome some challenges to bring SubCulture to fruition. Having “to get the pitch tracker working accurately across a variety of sound sources” was something Baby Audio had to contend with according to Bock. “We ended up with something that does that and with very deep calibration options for getting the tracking to work on nearly any monophonic signal.”
Pitch detection has been quite a challenge for many companies, especially outputting accurate MIDI note data, you focused on monophonic bass, which made things easier, but could your technology be utilized for more complex note data? “Yes, that’s definitely one of the next potential rabbit holes. The hard thing is doing polyphonic tracking with tolerable latency and with a high enough accuracy that it’s usable in real mixing scenarios where even one wrong reading ruins the result. But it’s one of the concepts we might explore for a future update.”
