BoomChik / LinnDrum II Delayed Again – Could Be Vaporware

Roger Linn and Dave Smith have put the skids on the debut of the BoomChik / LinnDrumII collaboration…again. “I’m sorry to report that we won’t be shipping in 2008 and I can’t yet offer a new estimated ship date,” Linn reveals on his website.

The original BoomChik concept is certainly a moving target. Announced almost two years ago, the MPC-style drum machine / analog synth hybrid garnered a lot of interest, but Linn and Smith haven’t been able to settle on a design, and after the latest missed delivery date certain industry insiders are dubbing the product vaporware. Here’s our illustration of the BoomChik / LinnDrumII’s evolution:

Roger Linn claims that the delay will be a positive in the long run. “The good news is that it’s turned into a significantly more powerful and creative product. The bad news is that we’d prefer not to release details of the new design because it’s so cool that I don’t want to show our cards to the competition.” Funny that Linn says that since he’s been showcasing the designs from the get go.

“However, I do want to thank all those who wrote in with suggestions because this interactive design process has very much helped to change what we thought the product originally should be into what we now know you really want,” Linn continues. “So please hold your questions while we’re hard at work on it.”

Since Linn or Smith really don’t have any idea at this point what exactly the LinnDrumII will be if released, they’ve taken to coming up with snappy subtitles. “For those of you who are new to LinnDrum II, its new subtitle is Beat-Centric Digital Audio Workstation with Integrated Analog Synthesis.

Huh?! Beat-Centric?? OK boys, it’s time to put down the bong and Pabst and concentrate on engineering. There’s no need for subtitles. Users will be able to figure out what to do with the LinnDrumII, just come out with something already…
