Pittsburgh Modular’s original Lifeforms SV-1 paid homage to the classic East Coast-style synths of the past while introducing new, features. Building on a decade of research since the original SV-1, Pittsburgh Modular is again revisiting East Coast synthesis with the Lifeforms SV-2.

Balancing the character of old school “East Coast” synths with modern possibilities, the Lifeforms SV-2 reimagines the classic analog signal chain by building on the foundations of the past. The result is an instrument that offers the organic warmth and power of vintage analog alongside the expanded creative potential of modern ideas.
The oscillator core has been redesigned to include Thru-zero FM and Phase Modulation, allowing the new triangle core oscillator to stay in tune even under frequency modulation. To further expand the sound palette, the Pulse Symmetry waveform adds a second “vertical” dimension of modulation to pulse waves, enabling deeper and more evolving textures than standard pulse width modulation. Additionally, the proprietary Blade Wave creates a sawtooth variant that offers a dense, natural chorus effect through the manipulation of harmonic content.
The Lifeforms SV-2 introduces a pair of Character modes and customized Overdrive to meet the demand for vintage-inspired grit and harmonic saturation. The Character modes recontextualize legacy signal-processing techniques to dynamically reshape the filtered waveforms, further enhanced by an integrated overdrive circuit designed to transition seamlessly from subtle thermal warmth to high-gain harmonic destruction. By combining these advanced processing tools, the SV-2 offers a comprehensive ecosystem for sophisticated sound sculpting, ranging from pristine analog textures to raw, industrial intensity.
Harmonic saturation and overdrive are fundamental elements in defining the character and physical presence of an analog signal. While saturation provides a subtle enhancement of depth and structural weight, overdrive offers a more assertive application of harmonic power and sonic authority. The Lifeforms SV-2 integrates these essential processing capabilities directly into its personality, featuring six independent saturation and overdrive stages strategically distributed throughout the signal path. This comprehensive design allows for granular control over the harmonic profile of a sound, enabling precise sculpting from transparent warmth to aggressive distortion at multiple points in the synthesis chain.
