Frap Tools Ships Magnolia – 8-Voice Bi-Timbral Polyphonic Analog Synth

Frap Tools, the Italian manufacturer previously established in the Eurorack and 500-Series markets, has officially entered the standalone instrument category with the release of Magnolia. Now shipping, the unit is an 8-voice, bi-timbral analog synthesizer designed to provide both traditional polyphonic sounds and complex, modular-style timbres. The hardware is built around a 61-key FATAR keybed that supports velocity and polyphonic aftertouch, housing a signal path designed entirely from scratch without the use of stock integrated circuits.

At the core of the Magnolia is an engine that blends traditional East Coast and West Coast synthesis techniques. Each of the eight voices utilizes two oscillators: one dedicated to standard pulse width modulation and a second specialized for linear thru-zero frequency modulation, wavefolding, and flip sync. This triangle-core architecture allows users to move beyond standard subtractive synthesis into the aggressive, harmonic-rich territory of complex oscillators. The signal path is rounded out by a resonant filter and a dedicated analog distortion circuit capable of producing everything from delicate glass-like pads to high-gain leads.

Modulation is handled via a comprehensive matrix that connects 16 sources to 38 destinations through a simplified “push-and-turn” interface. The system includes three LFOs and three envelopes, alongside a specialized random generator called Polymove. Unlike standard global randomizers, Polymove generates unique control signals for every individual voice and destination, creating organic, evolving movement within a patch. For live performance, the front panel provides a Macro knob for multi-parameter control and a Morph knob that enables a seamless transition between Part A and Part B settings, complemented by two expression pedal inputs and standard pitch and mod wheels.

For real-time control, the front panel includes standard pitch and modulation wheels, two expression pedal inputs, and two dedicated performance knobs. The Macro knob is assignable to any internal parameter, while the Morph knob allows users to gradually transition between the specific settings of Part A and Part B. Modulation is handled by a matrix consisting of 16 sources and 38 destinations, all featuring LED status indicators. This system includes three LFOs, three envelopes, and a specialized random generator called Polymove, which creates unique control signals for every voice and its assigned destinations.

Designed for professional studios and performers seeking a distinct alternative to standard analog synthesizers, the Frap Tools Magnolia prioritizes a hands-on workflow without menu diving. Its combination of polyphonic aftertouch, deep thru-zero FM capabilities, and discrete analog circuitry provides a versatile platform for sound design.

Frap Tools’ Magnolia is available now for €4,199.
