Korg Debuts New WaveState Models – WaveState mkII, WaveState SE & WaveState SE Platinum But No Desktop Version

Korg has upgraded their WaveState synth to mk II status and debuted two new SE 61-key models. Sadly, Korg did not release a desktop module, which many users have been clamoring for…nor is there any MPE implementation, which seems like such a miss considering what the WaveState can achieve sonically,

Korg feels the full-size, 37-key model is desktop applicable, but most users who work in compact spaces, or have a quality MIDI controller keyboard would disagree. Regardless, the mk II increases stereo polyphony to 96 voices, refreshes the chassis and provides 15 new performances. In addition, 43 more presets are included and Korg claims to have updated each of the 246 Performance choices, as well as more than half of the 756 total presets.

4GB Of Internal Sample Storage

The mkII allows you to import up to 4 GB of your own Multisamples into the WaveState via the free Sample Builder application for Mac and Windows. In addition, there are a ton of third-party libraries available to download. Use your new samples in Wave Sequences or as single Multisamples. For even more rich and complex results, you can layer up to four Programs together in a Performance. Each Performance can have their own effects and arpeggiator. The Vector Envelope and Joystick mix the individual voices of the four Layers, and can also modulate any other parameters.

The WaveState mkII contains balanced stereo outputs and a stereo headphone output is provided for private playing or onstage cueing. Din-style MIDI jacks ensure connection to other MIDI-equipped instruments and audio gear. The WaveState supports class-compliant USB MIDI connections to Windows and Mac computers, and the WaveState Editor/Librarian and Sample Builder programs are available as free downloads from Korg. Unfortunately, Korg decided not to implement new MPE technology into the mkII, a decision that’s somewhat dumbfounding, considering the synth’s potential. However, it Korg hasn’t incorporated MPE in any of their synths, so maybe they just hate the technology.

Remember when Korg “upgraded” their Electribe units a while back by simply adding a tube stage? This isn’t as disappointing, but close.

Korg’s WaveState mkII costs $699.99. No availability has been announced.
