Roland Premiers Mood Pan – Electronic Handpan

Roland has debuted the Mood Pan, an electronic handpan that encourages Lululemon-wearing housewives anyone “to discover the restorative power of music.” Before we all start holding hands and singing Kumbaya, we can tell you that there is a segment of the market that is definitely looking for an easy-to-play instrument like the Mood Pan. And while the Mood Pan is not the first electronic Handpan, it positions itself adroitly between amateurs and enthusiasts who are not looking to spend $3000.

Mood Pan features tranquil tones and a simple design that they claim does not require previous musical skills, although a sense of rhythm is definitely encouraged, at least for you neighbor’s sake. Along with providing audio for the onboard sounds, its built-in 2.1 speaker system can also play background music and stream Bluetooth audio from mobile devices, meaning once you get bored of trying to sound like Yanni, you can simply use it as a Bluetooth speaker.

Mood Pan’s electronic design offers many benefits over traditional handpans, empowering you to create, perform, and practice without limitations. Explore different instruments and tunings, enhance sounds with unique effects, and silence the onboard speaker by plugging in headphones for solo sessions.

Mood Pan is made to be played with your fingers. The nine pads can be assigned to different musical scales, making it impossible to hit a wrong note. It’s also possible to play the sides with your palms to create percussive sounds and resonant tonalities. Glide through expressive aural journeys by tapping spontaneous melodies, muting sounds with a touch, and using the special control pad to add expressive colors to certain tones.

Select a traditional Handpan sound, or call up other acoustic percussion such as tongue drum, gamelan, crystal bowl, or singing bowl…

With Mood Pan, you can change the sound at any time. Select a traditional handpan sound, or call up other acoustic percussion such as tongue drum, gamelan, crystal bowl, or singing bowl. There’s also a sitar voice for exploring Indian textures, orchestral strings, synth pad tones, and four user locations with selectable sound variations.

Mood Pan includes environmental music and nature sounds for background and playing along, along with four modes that provide tranquil sounds for mornings, evenings, relaxing, and yoga sessions. It also doubles as a high-quality Bluetooth speaker for streaming music from your favorite mobile devices.
