Sonicware has released Liven Ambient ø is a wavetable desktop synth designed for producing expansive sounds and sonic textures for ambient music.
With 10-voice polyphony, the all-digital wavetable synthesis engine, which Sonicware has dubbed Blendwave Modulation Synthesis, has 32 wavetables and six preset routing configurations, or Structures, grouped into Drone, Pad and Atmos layers. These make use of the its three oscillators and various forms of modulation, including pitch, ring and frequency modulation. Each layer has a dedicated envelope, high and low-pass filters and two LFOS.

The Liven Ambient has a built-in speaker and can be battery powered with six AA’s. A power adapter can be purchased for $20 more. For connectivity, there is at 3.5mm stereo line I/O, MIDI I/O, Sync I/O, as well as a headphone output. Ambient Liven contains a four-track sequencer, with a single track assigned to each of its Drone, Pad, Atmos and Noise Structure. Patterns can be as long as 64 steps and there is a multimode arpeggiator onboard.

As Ambient Music is all about effects, Sonicware provides nine different types of Reverb plus Tape Delay, Reverse Delay, EQ, Overdrive, Chorus and Bitcrusher, but only on the Master Output. In an interesting move, Sonicware offers eight pre-recorded nature sounds to go along with the synth’s Noise Layer. You can also sample up to 8 seconds of stereo audio via the instrument’s line input to add your own textures.

Sonicware traveled back to 1996 to create their website, so it’s hard to gain a comprehensive understanding of all that the Liven Ambient’s can do, but the Japanese company asserts that they “conducted extensive research into creating undulating and fluctuating tones for Ambient, resulting in the development of a new wavetable-based synthesis” that they call Blendwave Modulation Synthesis. It combines six unique structures with 32 WAVEs featuring complex harmonic transitions, which they claim makes “it easy to create powerful low drones, lush pads, and transparent pizzicatos, perfect for Ambient Music.” The video above is helpful for understanding the units workflow.
