Korg Finally Relents – Debuts Wavestate, OPSIX & Modwave Modules

Korg has — FINALLY — announced rack-mountable 4U mdule versions of their popular synths, the Wavestate mk2, the Modwave mk2 and the OPSIX mk2. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Korg only gives you a $50 reduction on the price. How eliminating a ton of materials, including a keybed only results in a $50 savings is definitely a head scratcher, but look on the bright side, you finally can put the Wavestate on your desk.

Korg’s modwave mk2 module contains all of the features of the modwave mk2 in a compact 19″ desktop/rackmount package. Modwave builds on the legacy of Korg’s DW-8000 and transforms it into a modern synth, featuring deep wavetable oscillators, filters, flexible modulation, polyphony, pattern sequencing, and hands-on control to deliver customizable sounds and phrases.

In 2020, the Wavestate mk1 brought Korg’s Wave Sequencing into the present day. Featuring the re-imagined Wave Sequencing 2.0, the Wavestate delivers evolving, ever-changing sounds with extensive hands-on control. The wavestate was designed from the ground up for a new generation of musicians, producers, and composers, taking cues from sources as diverse as modular synths, groove boxes, and algorithmic composition. Taking full advantage of both a new enclosure design and new processing hardware, the Wavestate module provides 120 stereo voices of polyphony. The new 4U rack-mount enclosure has the same controls as the keyboard models, yet is easily transportable and fits neatly into any studio or desktop production system. Responding to user requests, we’ve also updated all LFOs with options for free running, delayed start, and retriggering, added new modulation sources, and more. P.S. A software update will also be available for the original Wavestate. The wavestate module is fully compatible with the sounds and samples of the original wavestate, wavestate mk II, wavestate SE, and wavestate native software, as well as many excellent third-party libraries.

It took a minute, but it looks like the time is finally right to jump into the Korg OPSIX, Wavestate and Modwave universe

The Korg OPSIX’s Operator Mixer has simplified FM synthesis for the first time, making it not just comprehensible but also controllable when it first debuted as a keyboard. With the addition of extra synthesis capabilities and programming, it offered a more efficient workflow and an even richer sound. Now, Korg has created a new form of OPSIX, the module. This model supports MIDI 2.0 property exchange and poly aftertouch, and is a solid companion to Keystage. It’s also fully compatible with the sounds of the original OPSIX, OPSIX mk2, OPSIX SE, and OPSIX native software, as well as numerous third-party libraries, and can have up to 80 voices of polyphony. The new 19″ rack-mountable enclosure has the same controls as the keyed models, yet is easily transportable and fits neatly into any studio or desktop production system.

Urban Rhythm Releases Backstory Album 11/23/2023

Urban Rhythm — Backstory — New Release!

“Urban Rhythm serves as a testament to the limitless frontiers of sonic artistry, where the boundaries of imagination dissolve into a realm of poetic resonance and artistic revelation.”

Korg is positioning these new modules in a similar fashion to how Moog presented their semimodular synth trifecta, the DFAM, Subharmonicon and Mother32. A desktop rack is available ($) and it will look quite enticing in micro studios across the globe. It’s hard to determine why the modules are only a fist-full of dollars below the price of the keyboard versions, especially to allow them to compete with other micro studio modules, but it does allow them to drop the price in the future when the initial demand drops off.

The Korg Wavestate mk2, OPSIX mk2 and Modwave mk2 modules cost $649.99, $699.99 and $749.99 respectively.
