Apple has purchased AI Music, a London-based startup that uses artificial intelligence to create soundtracks using royalty-free music. The basic concept is to create personalized music for each listener based on user interaction. The idea is actually nothing new, since video game developers have employed this concept to change music based on game play. However, AI Music infused artificial intelligence into royalty-free music to create dynamic mood music, while not having to actually pay musicians for their talent.

The buy out of AI Music, founded in 2016, was completed last week. We reached out to Apple to see what’s the future of the employees, but haven’t heard back yet.
Previously, AI Music declared that its mission statement was to “give consumers the power to choose the music they want, seamlessly edited to fit their needs or create dynamic solutions that adapt to fit their audiences.” The startup claims to have worked with advertising companies to development more emotional advertisement that played different music depending on the target audience.
The acquisition is one of Apple’s few purchases last year, which found the tech superpower to tread more carefully, perhaps not to draw attention to itself while it fends off lawsuits from smaller concerns who feel its App Store tactics are unsavory.
Interestingly enough, Apple’s last purchase was for Primephonic, another music company that developed a classical music streaming service.
