Roli has announced the Lumi Keys Studio Edition. The new bundle comes with Lumi Keys, Roli Studio software suite, three additional Roli Studio Soundpacks and a voucher for Roli.com. Lumi Keys is part of the Roli Blocks ecosystem and offers some dynamic technology, including illuminated keys, per-key pitch bend and polyphonic aftertouch.
Roli hasn’t given FutureMusic the chance to review Lumi keyboard, mostly because we’ve been critical of their Equator software, and their Roli Blocks lineup. However, we are huge fans of the groundbreaking Roli Seaboard Rise. This is the cost of not being a pay-for-play magazine and using multiple evaluators for the majority of our reviews.

Roli Lumi Keys Studio Edition
The Roli Lumi claims to provide pitch bend through vibrato-like movements on each key, but you can also change the texture of each sound via continuous pressure. Roli calls this natural expression the Four Dimensions of Touch that make Lumi Keys a MPE controller with a traditional keyboard form factor. Roli asserts this is the world’s first keyboard of this nature, but other technologies have existed previously that utilized traditional keyboard design.

Roli also offers the ability to connect several Lumi Keys together, utilizing their Magnetic DNA connectors, from their Blocks product line. This allows you to connect two, three, or four keyboards together to create a 48, 72, or even 96-key playing surface, although a configuration of this nature can get quite expensive.
Speaking of which, bundling Roli software to make the Lumi Keys more attractive is an easy way for Roli to provide value without costing the English concern anything in return. We’re not sure if you can use the $50 voucher on the purchase of a Blocks product, or if it’s relegated to software, but it’s still an inexpensive methodology to turnover Lumi keyboards.
