Baby Audio has released I Heart NY, a New York style parallel compressor. What does New York style mean? Well, to Baby Audio, it means a distinctly “punchy flavor.”
It works by creating a copy of the incoming audio signal – hosted within the plug-in – and lets you “spank it hard before mixing it in.” Wait. What?? That’s right, it actually has a Spank knob, which controls an adaptive algorithm with a unique sonic character. It can range from a subtle punch to pretty hardcore, according to Baby Audio. The workflow replicates true parallel compression, but with the ease of avoiding complicated routing.
Parallel compression, the traditional way, means setting up a separate bus, sending your audio to it, crushing it hard, then blending it back in with your signal.
