Robn Announces New Handsfree Portable Music System

A startup called Robn has announced two new wearable music systems. The systems offer some interesting concepts that should appeal to action sports and athletic users, but it’s very difficult to determine how well the systems work without going through one of our arduous long-term tests. Both models are available for preorder and claim to ship in mid-September. The premise is to be able to enjoy music, podcasts, audio books, etc. without isolating yourself from the world around you. The benefits include maintaining situational awareness, especially in crowded city environments, and still being able to enjoy nature, while going on a hike.

The entry-level H1 features two 2.0 Watt stereo speakers that are contained in a water-resistant harness. Robn designed the speakers to be directional – pointing up at the ears – to limit annoying others in your vicinity. The harness, which comes in four different colors, goes across your back and deposits the speakers on your collarbones, which could be problematic if not padded correctly, especially for running activities. A Li-polymer, 950mA rechargeable battery with a claimed 5-8 hour life powers the speakers. It includes a built-in speakerphone for conversing hands-free, a MicroSD card slot for storing music files and Bluetooth 5 connectivity to enabled devices. One feature that really stands out from other wearables are the rear LED safety lights that can be illuminated to increase visibility.

The H2 includes everything the H1 contains, but adds an extended battery life and a built-in Walkie-Talkie with a proposed 2km range. The Walkie Talkie functionality is a cool idea for communicating hands-free during outdoor activities such as cycling, mountain biking and snowboarding.

The Robn H1 costs $139 and the H2 costs $199. Both are available for preorder with a mid-September delivery.
