RIAA Lobbying Congress For Increase In Statutory Damages For Copyright Infringement

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is lobbying to amplify the current statutory damages allowed under copyright law. Using the issue of compilations, which are treated as a single work, the RIAA wants each copied track to count as a separate act of infringement. What does this mean? That if someone is caught illegally downloading a complilation CD of let’s say 10 tracks they could be theoretically fined $1.5 million.

The RIAA is making the case to Congress in the form of the PRO-IP Act.
