../ Mini TestDrive: Socket Sense

One of the biggest problems that project studio owners face is the dreaded "wall wart." These oversized adapters have a tendency to take up two or three plugs on a surge protector, making them highly inefficent, and creating a tangled web of wires.

Socket Sense Review

The innovative Socket Sense surge protector expands to meet the needs of your various "wall warts"

Serveral manufacturers have addressed this issue by putting the "wart" in the middle of a powercord, but others have decided to let the consumer deal with the issue despite fielding numerous complaints.

Enter Socket Sense. IDEATIVE Product Ventures, inventors of the Socket Sense, viewed this common problem as an opportunity and began developing a designated surge protector that could adapt to the plug instead of the other way around.

Sugar-Bytes Effectrix

Features:

  • Fully Adjustable Sockets
  • 2160 Joules of Surge Protection
  • Six Foot Power Cord
  • Power Switch with 15A Breaker
  • Surge and Ground LEDs
  • Cable Management Channels
  • Metal Oxide Varistor Components
  • Keyholes for Wall Mounting
  • Limited 5 year warranty against defects

Socket Sense utilizes an ingenious sliding metaphor that expands the length of the protector based on the width of the wart. The plug inserts are also positioned on an angle, which allows them even more adaptability. The Socket Sense received kudos from all our reviewers specifically for its intelligent approach to the wall wart dilemma. There are other solutions on the market for accomodating wall warts, but none are as elegant as the Socket Sense.

We've been testing the Socket Sense for several months and have found it to be an excellent solution. Initially, we were wary of the build quality of a sliding power mechanism, but after our long-term test, the Socket Sense never became loose and unstable. In fact, we haven't experienced any problems to date with the protector even after it passed through several hands, and was employed in many different environments.

We subjected the Socket Sense to mild power fluctuations, which successfully tripped the 15 amp breaker without frying the fuse. Ideative rates the surge protection at 2160 Joules, but doesn't provide an equipement guarantee if your gear gets roasted. The Socket Sense does come with a limited 5 year warranty against defects.

The Ideative Socket Sense costs $29.95 and is available now.
