../ Europe Sues Music Uploaders
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has sued 459 individuals in six countries who they allege are sharing large
amounts of copyrighted songs on Peer-To-Peer (P2P) networks. "This is the largest single wave of lawsuits to be announced outside the U.S."
according to the IFPI.
KaZaA, Grokster, BearShare, I-Mesh, and other P2P network's uploaders were targeted specifically by the IFPI. Unlike the Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA), who also sued illegal downloaders as well. Of the six countries, the suits were the first of their kind to be initiated
in France, Austria and the UK. Denmark, Italy and Germany have already filed suits against individuals who illegally shared copyrighted music.
At a press conference announcing the suits in the UK, IFPI Chairman and CEO, Jay Berman stated "after spending more than a year with our awareness
campaign, we're no prepared to do more than talk about the law, we're prepared to enforce it." The defendants face civil or criminal suits that could
lead to damages of "several thousand euros" if convicted.
The Future: Exclusively pursuing Uploaders in an interesting twist on the legal assault against illegal file trading in Europe and reveals
their strategy of avoiding some of the public relation gaffs that the RIAA made during their initial round of lawsuits. As expected, France (50) and
Italy (7) were particularly weak in their filings and will not be taken seriously by their citizens until they take a stronger position. More suits
are sure to follow.
