../ i2hub P2P Network Shuts Down
i2hub,
a small, but very potent Peer-To-Peer (P2P) file sharing network specially for college students, has suddenly shut down citing legal
ramifications from the entertainment industry. The service, which ran on an advanced, super high-speed network that linked 240 universities
and colleges, was created by Wayne Chang when he was a sophomore at the Amherst campus of the University of Massachusetts.
The network was run by the Internet2 consortium and enabled students to
download movies and music in a fraction of the time it takes on typical broadband connections. Full songs could be downloaded in 15-20
seconds while an entire movie only required five minutes.
The i2hub's homepage just had a R.I.P. 03.14.2004 - 11.14.2005 notification
and no reason was given on the site for Chang pulling the plug. However, it's obvious that Chang didn't want to incur the wrath of
the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America who have been systematically suing P2P networks
in an effort to protect their content from piracy. i2hub claimed to have
almost a half a million subscribers.
The Future: At 20 seconds per song and 5 minutes for a full movie,
Internet2 is Armageddon to the content industry. i2hub is a peak behind the curtain where the Wizard of Copyright Infringement
is frantically pulling every legal switch, knob, and lever before all hell breaks loose when Internet2 is accessible to
the general populace.
