../ RIAA Sues XM Over New Inno Device
Three words: massive wholesale infringement
Just like we predicted when XM Satellite Radio announced
their new Inno portable satellite radio with TiVo-like
functionality, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is suing XM
for "massive wholesale infringement." Oh Boy, not just wholesale
infringement, but massive wholesale infringement.
XM Radio's Inno made by Pioneer
The RIAA filed suit on May 16th on behalf of the four major labels,
Universal, SonyBMG, Warner Music and EMI, who are seeking damages of $150,000 per song copied by the Inno device. This comes after
months of terse negotiations on developing a special licensing fee for the new technology. The RIAA had previously reached an agreement
with Sirius Satellite Radio who sells a similar device, however, the RIAA claims that XM refused pay any sort of licensing fee so they
were forced to sue.
The Future: The cantankerous discussions between XM and the
four majors have clearly reached such a state that the RIAA is now forcing XM's hand with this massive lawsuit (how many times
are you going to say "massive" in this story?? -Ed). Although we like to pat ourselves on the back from time to time, it wasn't much
of a stretch to see this coming. The Inno's innovative TiVo meets
iTunes functionality was a big fat bull's eye for the RIAA.
