../ Satellite Radio Reports Wider Loss
XM Satellite Radio Holdings and Sirius Satellite Radio both posted
big losses during the fourth quarter. Both stocks plummeted close to 10% revealing that the new format still has a long way to go despite
support from Detroit's automakers. Sirius reported a loss
of $311 million on revenue of $80 million up from $252 million a year earlier. XM
had a loss of $268 million compared to $188 last year.
XM was also set back by the sudden resignation of CEO Pierce Roberts who
publicly stated he didn't approve of the company's "direction" and felt XM would go through a major "crisis" in the near
future. Not pretty.
The losses stem from the high cost of marketing and name-brand programming
talent. Sirius' deal with Howard Stern reportedly is worth $580 million while XM paid through the nose for Major League Baseball rights.
Investors have remained skittish despite increased subscriber numbers, XM now has 6 million and Sirius has almost 3.5 million.
The Future: Warner Satellite radio has major threats looming
from technology. The immediate threat stems from pirated broadcasts of Stern's popular Sirius show being fervently traded by fans online.
The Stern devoted only have to wait a few hours before the latest show is available online for download.
In addition, mobile phone operators want in. Lucrative streaming broadcasts direct to mobile phones will turn into major competition for
the satellite providers in the next couple of years.
