../ Apple, Motorola, Cingular To Announce ROKR iPod Phone

Apple is planning a large media event on September 7, 2005 with Motorola and Cingular to officially announce the Motorola ROKR, a new cellular phone that will run the Apple iPod operating system and be able to play at least 1000 digitally compressed songs. The iPod Cell Phone has been in development for at least a year with speculation that it would be released this summer.

Apple is notoriously tight lipped about product announcements and has had to hold Motorola, who likes to tout upcoming products in advance, at bay for the past several months. Rumors abounded that this caused major friction between the two concerns with the hype-happy Motorola having to put the kibosh on their public relations machine. Other problems occurred when several cellular services rejected incoporating the music phone into their services. They were not happy about getting cut out of money since the phone connected directly to a computer for the transfer of songs instead of being downloaded through their networks.

Another major problem emerged when Creative Technology, the company behind the Nomad and Zen digital music players, received a patent recently for the graphical user interface (GUI) utilized on portable music players that rivals, including Apple's iPod may be infringing on. Apple's own patent application for the iPod GUI was rejected. The Singapore based company has not made any announcements whether they are going to sue companies that they feel are infringing on their new patent, or try and negotiate licensing agreements.

The first incarnation of the ROKR Phone will likely be a Flash Memory based model with 512MB to 1GB of memory and come with a special pair of quality headphones with a built in mic for hands free use. The user will attach the ROKR to a computer via USB 2.0 to transfer songs via iTunes.

The announcement will be followed by a massive commercial campaign created by Ogilvy & Mather featuring Madonna, Iggy Pop and even dead rock stars Jimi Hendrix and Biggie Smalls.

The Future: The debut of the ROKR cell phone means the Ringtone business is officially dead.
