GREAT article. In my opinion, progress is always a good thing, in any industry. That statement won't be popular with traditionalists, and they will argue that advances in technology do not necessarily mean progress, but technology ultimately allows DJs to explore more creative avenues instead of focusing on mechanics (as you pointed out). I'm always going to be an advocate for any tools that allow a person to express himself (or herself) more completely and creatively.

Thanks Will. We're glad that someone from IK is reading our blog and commenting. We're just wondering exactly which "pro DJ" is using this at a major venue?

Hello there, while looking for some essentials of my collection i noticed that i had lost the essential mp3s from 2006, 2007 and 2008... i don't know where they went!

So i'm willing to upload my essentials if you are willing to share those 3 years that i lost. (note that i don't keep EVERY essential, just those i like since 1993)

Megaupload is down, rapidshare sucks.. how about mediafire (free and fast).

DJ Rig is the bomb. Thanks to the built-in beat matching and ultra realistic "CloneDeck" vinyl scrubbing, pro DJs can finally leave the laptop at home and DJ with just an iPad.

I'm been a long time reader of the FutureMusic blog and this is one of the better stories I've read here. Every since I read this yesterday, I've been thinking about it in the back of my head. I really like the observation about how Cue points onthe CDJs exposed the potential of the digital world to the DJ community, as well as the "I know Kung-Fu" Matrix analogy. That struck a chord in me.

After reading this and deliberating over the question, I still don't know where I stand on the issue. Lot's of interesting roads here to go down and explore.

I'd really like to see more stories like this in The Future!

I think because of this phenomenon, after a while it becomes necessary to stop trying every new piece of gear, and work with what you've already got.

Fantastic! The majority of us probably know that drummer who is always practicing, tapping on any surface available. Now computer-based musicians can turn that tapping into a real drum beat. It can also be changed to reproduce any musical instrument with the correct software.

These controllers look great. The Behringer products that I own (UMA25S MIDI Keyboard Controller & Ultravoice XM8500 Microphone) have proven to be excellent products. I hope that these controllers will be available soon but they have to get the FCC's stamp of approval first. The FCC tends to slow down the process of those companies that are not their buddies. Behringer recently won a lawsuit against Peavey, over some copyright law, and I think that most of the delay issues with Behringer products and FCC approval have more to do with pressure from competing companies on the FCC to slow down the process, than any "real" reason. I hope Behringer will get fair treatment from the FCC because for me the important thing is that musicians, DJ's, studios, churches, and amateur music producers (like myself) can have access to good quality music making tools, for an affordable price.
Sorry for the rant but I wish I could get one of these controllers now and not in a year or more. Thank You, FutureMusic for giving us so much great information and Behringer for giving all the musicians who are not millionaires an affordable, high quality choice in music making tools, like my Behringer UMA25S MIDI Keyboard, that I use every day! Sincerely, Joseph W. aka WaterRabbitUSA, Cape Cod, MA, USA
