Aerial7 Debuts New Tank DJ Headphones

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Aerial7, a new headphone company in the Skullcandy mode, has dropped a new line of DJ-oriented headphones dubbed the Tank. The company claims the phones are “engineered to deliver the highest-quality listening experience from your mp3 player, cell phone or other music device.” However, your mileage may vary.

What we can say is that this company is definitely trying to be fashion-forward with provocative graphics and color-schemes that make the cans stand out. The Tank features swivel ear cups (very similar to Sony’s 700’s) with spring return for single-sided monitoring, and a rubberized, soft touch finish for a tactile premium feel. The puffy, pliable headband for comfortable extended listening, and ultra-thick earphone pads round out the experience.

The Tank includes two cables: 1) thick coiled 1/4″ cable for standard music players, 2) thin straight cable with microphone for cell phones.

Specs:
» 57mm Diameter Drivers
» Impedance: 64?
» Frequency Response: 5~20KHz
» Sensitivity (S.P.L.): 108±3dB (at 1KHz)
» Input Plug Diameter: 3.5mm and 3.5mm iPhoneTM included.
» 3.5mm~6.3mm (1/4″) adapter
» 3.5mm iPhone, Skype, cell phone adapter

The Aerial7 Tanks cost $80 bucks and are available now. More information on the Aerial7 Tank Headphones.

Think Geek Unleashes Bliptronic 5000 LED Synthesizer

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

“If HAL 9000 mated with R2-D2 and their electronic offspring was tutored by Kraftwerk it would probably end up something like the Bliptronic 5000 LED Synthesizer.” —Think Geek’s Crack Marketing Team

Think Geek’s new Bliptronic 5000 8-Bit synthesizer/sequencer is the first musical instrument by the eclectic cataloger. With an interface that’s reminisent of the Tenori-On, Monome, Block and the new Novation Launchpad, the Bliptronic 5000 is a palm-sized instrument that uses a pattern-based paradigm for music creation.

In the world of the Bliptronic, creating a song revolves around an ever evolving 4-beat pattern. Each row of vertical buttons represents the notes in one octave. Push a button to turn on a note, push the button again to turn off a note. Push multiple buttons in one vertical row to make a chord. The Bliptronic plays whatever you have selected in sequence horizontally across the display. When it reaches the end of the pattern, it repeats. The genius comes as you modify the pattern by turning notes on and off while the pattern is still looping to create evolving electronic melodies.

In addition to the grid of glowing LED buttons you’ll notice some other controls on the Bliptronic. These allow you to set the tempo (From 60-160 BPM), choose the instrument (From 8 different retro-synth type sounds), adjust the volume and turn looping on or off. An infinite number of Bliptronics can be attached together using the link ports and included cables. When one Bliptronic reaches the end of it’s pattern, the next Bliptronic is instantly triggered to start playing. This allows you to make longer songs where each person controls a section of the song. You can even set the tempo and instrument differently on each Bliptronic in the chain to achieve unconventional musical results.

Features:
» Unusual retro synthesizer is played with a grid of glowing buttons
» Create looping patterns and change them dynamically while playing
» Chain multiple units together and create more complex melodies
» One octave range. 8 notes can be played simultaneously
» 8 different old-skool synth sounding instruments to choose from
» Sounds created using FM waveform synthesis
» Set the BPM from 60 to 180 in 20 BPM increments
» Built in speaker with headphone jack and line-out jack
» Front panel is constructed from brushed aluminum
» Includes, manual and 2 link cables for connecting additional Bliptronic units
» Requires 4 x AA batteries (not included)

The Future: If the brain-trust behind the Bliptronic would have simply added MIDI to the 5000, they would have had the sleeper hit of the 2009 Holiday Season.

The Think Geek Bliptronic 5000 costs a mere $49 bucks and is available now. More information on the Think Geek Bliptronic 5000.

The DJ Mouse has been designed from the ground up to allow the user to mix, scratch and work the virtual decks using a variety of software on the market including Deckadance, which comes bundled with the product.

Here’s a demonstration video that showcases how you can “rock the party.”

The Future: The Image-Line brand kinda takes a hit on this one…

Samson Debuts Zoom Q3 Video Recorder With True Stereo Sound, Poor Video

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Samson has debuted the Q3, a new ultra-compact video recorder with true stereo sound. We want to jump up and down and tell you how much Samson has just nailed one of the biggest problems with these compact video camera segment spearheaded by Flip, but we just can’t. Why?

Well Samson made the fatal error of launching a compact video camera in 2009 with video resolution from 1999. Why would you launch a new compact video recorder in 2009 with a claimed awesome sound reproduction and super crappy video? Probably because Samson wanted to hit a certain price point, but they missed the whole point.

A Q3 with kick-ass sound and HD video would have said to the world: we’ve arrived with a big S on our shirts, not we’ve arrived on a gurney.

Features:
» Built-in stereo condenser microphones with X/Y configuration for true stereo imaging
» Accepts up to a 32GB SDHC card for 16 hours of recording time
» Large 2.4″ LCD display with a resolution of 320 x 240
» Video resolution of 640 x 480 at 30 frames/sec
» Video Format: MPEG-4 SP
» NTSC / PAL TV output
» Optics Lens Type: Fixed Focus (0.8m to infinity)
» Audio formats with video include 44.1/48kHz 16/24-bit Linear PCM WAV or MP3 up to 320kbps
» Audio only formats include 96kHz 16/24-bit Linear PCM WAV
» Auto Record Level automatically adjusts audio levels during recordings
» Uses two standard AA batteries or NiMH rechargeable batteries
» USB 2.0 with built-in cable
» Windows and Mac OS compatible
» Built-in speaker and tripod mount
» Includes on-board editing software, YouTube uploader software, Apple Quicktime, TV cable, softcase, windscreen, 2GB SD card, two AA Batteries

The Future: Hopefully, Samson will come to their senses and launch a Q4 in the near future with HD video, since this product will be DOA.

No pricing or availability has been announced. More information on Samson’s Zoom Q3.

Numark & Genius Products Announce Scratch Deck – DJ Videogame Controller

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Numark and Genius, Inc., have unveiled their new DJ videogame controller for the upcoming Scratch: The Ultimate DJ for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 consoles. The Scratch Deck will be showcased during the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The Scratch Deck combines two essential elements of the DJ and hip-hop experience – a free-spinning, touch sensitive turntable with a crossfader and 5 Akai Pro MPC-style drum pads. The turntable allows players to add their own style and manipulate the songs in real time, while the MPC-style drum pads give players the opportunity to perform and customize tracks by triggering samples using the very same pads that are the cornerstone of professional hip-hop beat production. In addition to the features created by Numark, Scratch Deck also contains standard game controls found in music rhythm games. The turntable features a realistic surface that feels remarkably similar to a vinyl record. The drum pads and the crossfader also deliver an authentic and realistic music production experience. Left-handed DJs will appreciate that Scratch Deck is designed for use in right or left-handed configurations.
