Keith Richards Documentary Announced – To Be Directed By Johnny Depp

Monday, February 8th, 2010

A new documentary on Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones has been announced. Johnny Depp has been tagged to direct the video bio, which begins next week. Depp and Richards have been friends for more than a decade, and the guitar legend even played Depp’s father in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

Depp last directed 1997’s “The Brave,” starring Marlon Brando. He’ll be seen next in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Richards agreed in 2007 to pen an autobiography to be published by Little, Brown & Co. in the U.S. and Weidenfeld & Nicolson in Britain in the fall of this year.

Part of the documentary will center on Richards’ punishment-defying biological makeup, which has enabled him to keep on going like the Energizer Bunny despite the man’s repeated efforts to do himself in…

Swayzak Offer Free Ableton Live Set Pack

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Ableton and Swayzak are offering a free Live Set for download that demonstrates how the dubby electronic band from the UK constructs their live shows.

“We take a fairly unstructured path to making a Live Set. Clips are grouped by type (beats, bass, percussion etc) but we don’t usually split a track into stems in order to replay it. We assign key commands to mute each track plus key commands which turn the global effects on and off (on the master channel). We have two sends (reverb and delay); this provides some space and, of course, “dubbiness.” It’s important to really know all the sounds—we usually go through and listen to each one on solo during preparation for a gig (we also delete or transform them if they are boring).”

Swayzak describe how they use Ableton in the video below:

“Then it’s a process of improvisation, as we build up songs using the clips. The aim is to keep the music as fluid and organic as possible—we’re not trying to reproduce an existing piece of music, rather to create something new and unique in real time. Sometimes, of course, there are mistakes or rather “unintentional deviations” that take us off into new directions. Overall, it feels best when we just play without thinking too much and arrive at a point where we don’t know how we got there. After all, it’s supposed to be LIVE.

Webcasters & SoundExchange Reach Agreement On Online Radio Royalties

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

SoundExchange and pure play Webcasters have reached an agreement regarding online radio performance royalties that will benefit independent labels and artists while also allowing the webcasters that give independents the most airplay and exposure the ability to grow their businesses, in which revenues independents will share.

The resulting pure play webcasting rates compensate the artists who create the music and the music labels that invest in that music creation on a fair and equitable basis, unlike traditional AM/FM radio which currently pays performers nothing when they play their music. At the same time these rates are also fair to the pure play broadcasters, most of them small businesses. The settlement will allow the online broadcasters to continue to stream music to listeners and still make a profit. These pure play webcasters are vital to independent artists and labels as they play almost triple the percentage amount of independent music compared to that played by traditional AM/FM radio, in response to the growing consumer demand for independent music. As consumer listening continues to shift to the internet these webcasters will have an ever increasing market share and audience.

For all artists and music labels performance income continues to become more important as replacement income for recorded music sales as consumer consumption patterns shift from buying music to listening to music. For independent artists and labels agreements like this settlement ensures independents can continue to reach our growing number of fans and be compensated fairly and on the same basis as all creators, regardless of the size of the artist or music label, so we can continue to create new music.

Danger Mouse Releases Dark Night Of The Soul As A Blank CD-R

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Due to a rub with EMI, Danger Mouse, the artist who launched his career with a brilliant mashup of Jay-Z’s “Black” album and the Beatles “White” release, will attempt to utilize online music file-trading to distribute his new endeavor with David Lynch, “Dark Night of the Soul.”

For some reason that not yet public, EMI has decided not to release the new album, which contains collaborations with Suzanne Vega, Sparklehorse, Vic Chesnutt, Jason Lytle and others. Citing “legal battles” as the reason behind the blow up, Danger Mouse developed a new concept to get his music into the public’s hands while giving EMI the finger.

The album is a collaboration with David Lynch and Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) and has a cinematic theme. The album first came to the industry’s attention with movie poster sniping during Austen’s SXSW music extravaganza in March.

Dark Night of the Soul, will be sold as a photography book with images supplied by David Lynch and will include a blank CD-R with these instrucitons: “For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.”

Armin Van Buuren Announces New Wii DJ Game

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Here we go again

Foreign Media Games and Armin van Buuren have announced a new DJ game for the Wii slated for debut this Fall entitled, wait for it, wait for it… Armin Van Buuren’s In The Mix – The Ultimate DJ Experience. Now when someone dubs something “The Ultimate…” you have to be wary. The game reportedly allows players to “experience for themselves what it is like to be a DJ like Armin, mixing electronic dance music and interacting with the audience.” (Where’s the schlepping of gear? Endless airports? Security checkpoints? Dodgy promoters? Slutty girls with the latest STD’s? Intoxicated punters bumping into your turntables? Trainspotters drooling on your shoulder? And so on… — Ed.)

The game will contain many of Armin van Buuren’s music masters and features artists he often works with. To make the experience complete, Armin will also include unique, never before released material in the Wii game. Players can use the available effects, loops and individual parts to mix music. Wii functionality will be optimally utilised to maximise the music mixing experience.

Armin van Buuren, awarded World’s Best DJ for the second consecutive year, is proud to be the first DJ in the world to have his own Wii game. “I’ve been a huge games freak for years and I am, of course, a music fanatic. Music mixing technology has improved enormously over the past few years. You can do a lot more with your choice of records and the various effects, making it even more fun to mesmerise your audience, take them on a musical journey and let them party on. Now you can discover how great it is to mix your own music in your own living room! This game shows you how I work as a DJ, but you can use your own style. Perfect your skills and make your friends and family totally crazy about Dance and Trance.”

No mention of utilizing the Wii’s motion controllers, so why the Nintendo platform? This sounds more promising than Paul Van Dyk’s pathetic Virtual Glow Stick App, at least on paper, but if you’re into DJing, why waste your time playing a game? Grab some DJ mixing software, and get into the real game!

Armin Van Buuren’s In The Mix – The Ultimate DJ Experience will premier sometime this Fall.

Trent Reznor Is Displeased

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Trent Reznor, Mr. Nine Inch Nails himself, is displeased. Well, he’s usually not in a buoyant state, but now he’s unhappy at a company that he genuinely likes, Apple. Not to long ago, Trent and his pals developed a snappy iPhone App that he’s using to promote his current tour and to make new mobile friends. But Apple’s hypocritical censorship policy is putting a damper on Trent’s most recent update…

…I’ll voice the same issue I had with Wal-Mart years ago, which is a matter of consistency and hypocrisy. Wal-Mart went on a rampage years ago insisting all music they carry be censored of all profanity and “clean” versions be made for them to carry. Bands (including Nirvana) tripped over themselves editing out words, changing album art, etc to meet Wal-Mart’s standards of decency – because Wal-Mart sells a lot of records. NIN refused, and you’ll notice a pretty empty NIN section at any Wal-Mart. My reasoning was this: I can understand if you want the moral posturing of not having any “indecent” material for sale – but you could literally turn around 180 degrees from where the NIN record would be and purchase the film “Scarface” completely uncensored, or buy a copy of Grand Theft Auto where you can be rewarded for beating up prostitutes.

How does that make sense? You can buy The Downward F#$&ing Spiral on iTunes, but you can’t allow an iPhone app that may have a song with a bad word somewhere in it. Geez, what if someone in the forum in our app says F#$& or C#$&? I suppose that also falls into indecent material. Hey Apple, I just got some SPAM about f#$&ing hot asian teens THROUGH YOUR MAIL PROGRAM. I just saw two guys having explicit sex right there in Safari! On my iPhone!

Come on Apple, think your policies through and for f#$&’s sake get your app approval scenario together.

Shaking a Baby to death on your iPhone is seemingly OK, but using profanity is not…
Trent, as usual, has a point….

Native Instruments & Richie Hawtin Leverage Twitter In Traktor Pro 1.2 Update

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Leave it to Native Instruments and Richie Hawtin to figure out how to leverage Twitter’s microblogging technology for brilliant use with the latest incarnation of their DJ mixing software, Traktor Pro.

Richie Hawtin has just embarked on a new tour with a Twitter-enabled Traktor setup, which will display the tracklists of his sets online in real-time as he plays them in the club. This savvy concept is based on a custom Twitter application developed by Richie Hawtin’s label Minus, which uploads the song metadata fed to it through the Internet broadcasting function of the Traktor Pro software. Track details will automatically be posted to Richie Hawtin’s Twitter channel every 30 seconds, allowing everyone to follow the tracklist of his performance, and providing exposure to the artists and labels whose music is being played. (F-ing Brilliant! –Ed.)

You can see Richie is incorporating Native Instruments’ new Maschine (pronounced "Machine-A") into his rig. More on this in a future story…

The technological collaboration with Minus has inspired several improvements to the broadcasting features of Traktor Pro, which will be made available through the upcoming free version 1.2 software update. Minus is also planning to release its Twitter application to the public in the near future, which will allow all Traktor users to take advantage of the Twitter live broadcasting feature.

Now we’ve seen some SMS technology for DJs to disseminate track information to the public, but this is the first time we’ve seen it implemented natively within a software mixing application that doesn’t overly burden the DJ with the task during a set. This is a huge step forward.

Native Instruments’ 1.2 update with the broadcasting feature will be available in June. Richie Hawtin’s Twitter channel is at http://twitter.com/rhawtin There are several more videos from Hawtin’s TimeWarp 2009 set via YouTube.

Paul Van Dyk Releases Lame iPhone App

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Paul Van Dyk has released an idiotic iPhone App that is apparently targeted towards DJs, but no DJ we know would be caught dead with a Virtual Glow Stick. Here Paul is trying to look excited when describing a worthless feature like the Seismic reader:

The PVD iPhone application was created by Zip Design and Yuza Mobile and features a BPM Counter, Frequency Analyzer, Decibel Meter, Seismic Reader, Virtual Glow Stick, DJ Check List, Flash Light and an Itinerary Manager. There really isn’t much here to chew on for $1.99. The Decibel Reader might be cool if you want to get “an idea” of the loudness of a subway train, bus, sound system, etc. but considering the quality of the iPhone’s microphone, it’s really a toy. The other features are just plain stupid or available for free.

Pretty weak outing for Mr. Van Dyk’s personal brand. Even his Public Relations firm couldn’t find anything worthwhile about the app and instead decided to regale us with how great Paul is…yes, we know he’s a terrific DJ, but this app is piss.

Phil Spector, Music Producer, Guilty Of 2nd Degree Murder

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Famed music producer Phil Spector was finally convicted of second-degree murder in the death of actress Lana Clarkson more than six years ago. Wearing a his trademark dazed and confused look and a black suit with a red tie and pocket square, Spector showed no reaction as the verdict was announced. Now 69, he faces a sentence of 18 years to life in prison when he is sentenced May 29.

The jury spent 30 hours deliberating the verdict – most others would have spent 30 minutes.

Prosecutor Alan Jackson said he believed the jury reached the correct verdict, and he acknowledged the strength and backing of Clarkson’s family. But defense attorney Doron Weinberg said Spector’s defense team disagreed and planned to appeal. “We don’t believe justice was done,” Weinberg said. (Of course you don’t Weinberg, there’s a lot more money to be made here! —Ed.)

Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler declined to allow Spector to remain free on bail pending sentencing, citing Spector’s years-long “pattern of violence” involving firearms.
