Jammie Thomas Guilty Of File Sharing Again – To The Tune Of $1.92 Million

Friday, June 19th, 2009

A federal jury has ruled that Jammie Thomas violated the copyrights on 24 songs, and awarded recording companies $1.92 million, or $80,000 per song.

Thomas, now Thomas-Rasset, received an even bigger beatdown then the first time she was tried by a different federal jury in 2007, which only levied a $222,000 judgment. The new trial was ordered after the judge in the case decided he had erred in giving jury instructions.

Thomas-Rasset reportedly was stunned when she heard the jury’s finding of willful infringement, and the penalty of $1.92 million ($80,000 per song) was announced. Her attorney, Kiwi Camara, felt that jurors didn’t believe Thomas-Rasset’s denials of illegal file-sharing, and that they were displeased with her attitude.

Camara said he and his client hadn’t decided whether to appeal or pursue the Recording Industry Association of America’s settlement overtures. Cara Duckworth, a spokeswoman for the RIAA, said the industry remains willing to settle. She refused to name a figure, but acknowledged Thomas-Rasset had been given the chance to settle for $3,000 to $5,000 earlier in the case.

Wunder Audio Premiers Wunderbar Analog Console

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Wunder Audio has announced the Wunderbar, a new analog console with a fully symmetrically balanced discrete summing bus system.

The Console utilizes the PEQ2 Channel Amplifier delivering from 12 to 60 channels. A “Fully Balanced Bussing Scheme” is the heart of the Wunderbar, buffering the ground out of the equation. This results in significant increase in dynamic range while lowering noise substantially. There are transformer balanced direct outputs and inserts on all channels. The Stereo Buss champions The Wunderbahn and has three Stereo Amplifier choices: Wunder, 1272, and the 312.

The 1046 Routing modules are fully transformer balanced Class-A Discrete. Each channel has a monitor fader that is flip-able with the main channel fader. Also featured are six busses with illuminated switches, four auxes that are switchable pre or post, Pan Defeat, 48V phantom, and “Opto Silent” mute. If the console is short loaded, the Routing modules will act as a transformer-balanced inputs.

The Master Section includes a Control Room Monitor for monitoring six stereo sources, including busses. Mono, Dim, Mute, and Solo Clear are on large illuminated switches. Select from 3 sets of speakers or a headphone amp with separate volume control. The internal routing of sub groups to the stereo buss eliminates external patching, sparing monitor faders. The Eight-fader monitor section includes solo, pan, and placement into any of the busses. Talkback into any buss/aux is either latching, momentary, or remote. The master section has a large Illuminated master PFL, AFL Solo switch with Solo level.

Other features include: P&G 100mm Conductive Plastic Faders, thick hardwood end-cheeks in an unlimited choice of hardwoods, and full leather armrest.

The Wunderbar is available in 12 channel increments from 12-60 channels.

12 channels, 20 monitors, 1 Powerbar PSU, Exquisite Trim – $45,000
24 channels, 32 monitors, 1 Powerbar PSU, Exquisite Trim – $87,000
36 channels, 44 monitors, 2 Powerbar PSU’s, Exquisite Trim – $130,000

Akai APC40 Hands On! – We Put The Ableton Performance Controller To The Test

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

The new APC40 from Akai and Ableton has caused quite a stir within the tight-knit community of Live users since it was first announced at the 2009 NAMM show. We recently had the opportunity to spend some quality time with the APC40, and have determined, for the most part, the controller lives up the hype. But, don’t call it a controller. What Akai has produced in some ways is really move of an instrument, than merely a MIDI controller. In fact, the APC40 brings back Live to its roots as a performance application, and not a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), a moniker that Ableton tried to adopt in order to shoehorn the dynamic application into a retail product category… More!

Unearthed Circuits Unleashes Drone Machine

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

If you like your electronic music in bloops ‘n’ bleeps, then the nutjob behind Unearthed Circuits has unleashed a new device to melt your mind. The Drone Machine’s feature set is pretty much a wish list for Git-mo anyone into creating sounds that will drill a hole in your skull.

The Drone Machine is a four oscillator noise maker that is controlled by a joystick. The joystick has 4 SPDT micro switches that trigger in each direction. I have it wired to switches that allow you to change them between open or closed switches — Activating the oscillator or muting it. You can have any combination of of them set. The pitch of each oscillator can be changed using a knob, or by a photo-resistor. There’s a strobe circuit included that can be directed at the photo-resistors.

An effects section that contains overdrive, fuzz and ring mod effects, has also been incorporated. These affects can be tweaked using a knob or through body contacts mounted on the the front.

Apple’s New iPhone 3G S Adds Few Features, Kills Micro Video Market

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Apple announced their new iPhone 3G S, which they claim is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet – with processing speeds up to twice as fast as iPhone 3G, and longer battery life. The other real noteworthy addition is a new 3 megapixel autofocus camera, which will record stills and video.

While Apple is not labeling the video quality of the 3G S as HD (High Definition), they do describe it as “high-quality.” Which only means one thing: Cisco has just soiled their shorts (see The Future below).

The top of the line 3G S has 32 GB of built-in memory, which is more than enough for your Handbreak’d movies, music and videos. Other features include a compass (for when you’re lost at sea with your iPhone), support for 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, MMS (when AT&T gets their act together later this Summer), OpenGL ES 2.0 standard and basic voice control.

The new 3 megapixel autofocus camera captures pictures and video, making it easier than ever to capture, edit and share those moments instantly with family and friends. The new autofocus camera adjusts focus, exposure, color and contrast for the best possible image and includes an automatic macro focus for extra close up shots. With the new “tap to focus” feature, you simply touch the display to select an object or area of interest and the camera automatically re-adjusts focus and exposure. You can record video clips and edit them right on your iPhone 3G S by simply trimming the start and stop points. With iPhone 3G S you can send photos and video by email or MMS and post them to MobileMe or YouTube with just one tap.

The voice control feature in iPhone 3G S offers hands free operation for both iPhone and iPod functions. Simply speak the appropriate commands into the built-in microphone or headset microphone to dial by name or number. With voice control you can play your favorite music by artist, album or playlist and activate the Genius feature by saying “play more songs like this.” You can also tell iPhone to pause the music, play the next track, turn on shuffle or ask, “What’s playing right now?”

iPhone 3G S also includes the new iPhone OS 3.0 software with more than 100 new features including: Cut, Copy and Paste; MMS; Spotlight Search to search across iPhone or within Mail, Contacts, Calendar and iPod; landscape keyboard for Mail, Messages, Notes and Safari; expanded parental controls for TV shows, movies and apps from the App Store; and the ability to capture and send audio recordings on the go with the new Voice Memo app. iPhone 3.0 software also includes a new Find My iPhone feature that works together with MobileMe so you can locate your lost iPhone on a map, send a message that will appear on the screen or play a sound to help you find it even if your phone is set to silent. If you cannot find your iPhone, you can erase all data and content on your iPhone with the new Remote Wipe feature. New iTunes features available with iPhone 3.0 software include wirelessly downloading movies, TV and audio programs as well as iTunes U so students can download learning materials on the go.

The Future: Well Cisco must have crapped their pants (while the founders of Flip Video must have executed a victory jig) with this announcement, since it officially signals the beginning of the end of the micro video camera market. Within 2 years, most mobile phone manufacturers will have quality video recording on their entry level phones and the Flip will be a moot point.
