Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Shure has announced the PG27USB and PG42USB Side-Address Condenser Microphones and the X2U XLR-to-USB Signal Adapter.

The PG27USB and PG42USB microphones connect professional-caliber Shure microphones to any USB computer port with “Plug and Play” performance. The cardioid condenser microphones feature built-in headphone monitoring with low latency and monitor mix control, enabling users to instantly hear what they’re recording through headphones and make adjustments on-the-go.

The PG27 and PG42 are XLR counterparts to the USB models. The key difference between the PG27, PG27USB, PG42, and PG42USB microphones is the application for which they were designed:

The PG27 and PG27USB feature a flat, neutral frequency response for natural reproduction of a wide variety of instrument and vocal sound sources. The PG42 and PG42USB were specifically engineered to reproduce the subtle nuances of lead vocals. The large diaphragm allows for higher sensitivity to clearly reproduce refined performances. The low-cut filter and external shock-mount further optimize performance for vocals.

Features:
» Large diaphragm capsule

RIAA Reportedly Close To Solidifying Deals With Leading ISPs To Police Networks

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

The Recording Industry Association of America is reportedly putting the final touches on deals with the leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the States to police their networks for illegal file sharing.

The RIAA announced that they were dropping their unpopular litigation campaign last month, but that may be because they have offered ISPs a sweet incentive deal to clean up their dirty pipes. Although, the “leading ISPs” where not named, Comcast and AT&T are two of the gateways who will cooperate with the trade organization.

Although the ISPs have the power to issue their own procedures, this is most likely how it will go down. You’re sharing the latest Brittney Spear crap album online via some Peer-To-Peer (P2P) service, and the ISP gets wind of it since your eating up all the bandwidth in your neighborhood. The ISP will then slap you on the wrist and tell you “Daddy says no.” If you ignore their beat-down and continue to share movies, songs, etc. then the ISP will yank your account. You will then sign up with another provider and go through the same procedure until you get the boot from that ISP. And so, the Whack-A-Mole game goes on…

…well, at least the RIAA stopped suing dead people and 12 year-old girls on welfare.

NAMM Gear Of The Show Award: Akai APC40

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

NAMM always gives us a massive Gear Hangover. With the multitude of new product announcements, demonstrations, performances and parties, it consistently shocks us when we make it back to the office in one piece…well, mostly one piece…

Reflecting back on this year’s show, there were many “bits of kit” that will not only raise the high-water mark for the industry, but also set the pace for 2009. With the global economy suffering, it was obvious that many gear manufacturers were anxious about sales targets. The result was that many companies set their lowest MRSP points, foregoing the two tiered approach that many manufacturers favor, where they have a higher introductory price and then drop it 9 to 12 months later after the initial run.

This year we are giving the Akai APC40 our Gear Of The Show award. There were many other worthy candidates, but a dedicated Live controller that was fully sanctioned by Ableton, after years of a laisser-faire attitude towards the hardware market, is a new milestone that cannot be ignored.

For a very attractive price of $399, the APC40 will be a huge hit this year for Akai, and should just be the start of a dedicated Ableton Live controller series from the concern, whose product line has blossomed after being purchased by Numark. Kudos to Akai for bridging the hardware gap with Ableton and then delivering on that promise.

Roland Premiers VP-770 – Vocal Keyboard

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Roland has premiered the VP-770 at NAMM. The successor to the VP-550, this “vocal keyboard” allows a single musician to create realistic backing parts that range from futuristic electronic vocal textures to emulations of large-scale gospel choirs and beyond.

The human voice is the most expressive musical instrument of all, so why not use it as a tool to create ultra-realistic and expressive “virtual vocals” with words generated from your own voice? Whether you need one voice, a full choir, or surreal vocoder-like layers, the VP-770 can deliver the interactive, expressive vocal backing you need. The VP-770 is also equipped with world-class string and brass sounds, which can be blended together with the vocal effects.

One of the attributes of the VP-770 is its SuperNATURAL brass engine, enabling authentic performance never achieved before in a keyboard. Control every sound and element of the performance, including ensemble part levels, pan assignments, and EQ settings for each instrument, plus performance nuance such as Growl, Noise, Stability, and more.

The VP-770 is ideal for musicians who perform alone or in small groups, and who need an interactive, real-time backing chorus. It’s also great for film and TV music composers who are challenged with time and budget can use the VP-770 to generate high-impact choral arrangements on the spot. Churches in need of a choir (or choir enhancer) will love the VP-770. The creative possibilities are vast, as are the time/money savings that this instrument can provide.

Features:
» New patches with significant improvements to the Vocal Designer
» Enhanced expression with SuperNATURAL™-powered Brass
» The latest “Auto Harmony” technology
» High-quality headset microphone (DR-HS5, included) significantly reduces feedback
» Premium mic preamps built in
» Roland’s unique “Audio Key” – “Sound Looper” – and “USB Host”
» High-grade appearance with wood side panels and metal chassis

Roland Officially Unveils AX-Synth At NAMM

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Roland has officially unveiled the AX-Synth, a new wearable keyboard MIDI controller that has an on-board sound engine. The AX-Synth doesn’t have a wireless capability, as we hoped, but it does indicate that Roland is finally listening to their customers.

Roland missed the boat when their TB-303 was resurrected by electronic musicians almost 20 years ago. Instead of reissuing the “little silver acid box” with MIDI, they decided to give customers the finger. When they did finally succumb to pressure, they dropped the MC-303, a neutered dance music production box that left advanced dance producers shaking their heads.

According to a Roland rep at NAMM, one of the products that customers are constantly clamoring for is a revamped AX-1 keyboard controller. So instead of stiff-arming this market segment, Roland decided to hit it. Here’s how they pitch it:

It’s time to escape the keyboard rig and rock the stage. The stylish AX-Synth represents Roland’s new generation of remote keyboards, but for the first time, this one has a sound generator onboard. It’s self-contained and equipped with powerful, solo-oriented sounds from Roland’s latest, greatest synths. Strap on an AX and steal the show.

Features:
» Built-in Fantom-based, PCM sound engine
» Ribbon controller, D Beam, modulation bar, knobs, and easy to see display for stage
» USB MIDI for easy connection to PC
» Dedicated V-LINK button for video/visual control
» Long battery operation (approx. 6 hours claimed)

Akai Announces APC40 – Ableton Live Controller

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Akai has partnered with Ableton to create the APC40, a new control surface built exclusively for Ableton’s Live software.

Because Akai Professional and Ableton designed the APC40 for Live, you don’t need to map its controls to talk to the software. Just connect your laptop to the APC40 with its USB cable and you’re ready to go. The APC40 is class compliant, so you don’t even need to install drivers. And if you’re an advanced Live user, the APC40 gives you the ability to remap every one of its controls to suit your own style.

The APC40 features bidirectional communication between your computer and the controller. It can receive feedback from the software and display it on its clip matrix of 40 triggers and on LED rings surrounding each knob. The clip matrix gives you an instant view of clip status: what’s loaded, what’s playing, and what’s being recorded. Each state displays on the matrix in a different color so you can get a quick picture of clip state. You can shift your clip focus and get an overview of the clips you have loaded for your set. The APC40 has 16 knobs, each surrounded by a ring of LEDs. These LED rings make seeing your settings a breeze on dark stages, indicating the currently selected parameters’ values. This advanced visual feedback makes performing with the APC40 focused more on the music and less on squinting at the computer screen. In fact, you might even forget that the computer is there!

The APC40 is built with a rugged, metal chassis and slip-proof rubber detailing. Knobs and faders are solid and precise for pinpoint performance. It even features a high quality, replaceable crossfader.
The APC40 comes with a special edition of Ableton Live Lite so you can use it out of the box even if you’re new to Live. There’s also a free patch that upgrades full versions of Live so if you’re already a Live user, you can take full advantage of the APC40.

The APC40 has two banks of eight knobs. The first set controls Global parameters so you’ll always have instant access to your main sends, pans, and other essentials. The second bank of eight knobs is dynamically reassigned to the Track you select. You can control eight track parameters at a time, and as you switch channels, the Track knobs follow your focus. You also get special clip-status views and feedback that only the APC40’s matrix can display. The matrix is not limited to only 40 clips: you can scroll and shift, enabling access to an unlimited number of cells.

The APC40 has a wide range of controllers. The eight Global knobs can access four banks of controls; the eight Track knobs control nine different track parameters each. This gives you a massive total of 72 controllers that are dynamically reassigned. Channel faders, bus faders, and a crossfader give you smooth control of key values. You have even more control power with special controls including Tap Tempo, Tempo Nudge, record enables, solo/cues and two assignable footswitch inputs.
