Dancetracks Shutters Its NYC Location – Pins Its Hopes On Mediocre Download Store

Dancetracks, once a staple in the lives of NYC DJs, has announced that it is closing its doors this Friday. The announcement is yet another nail in the coffin for the venerable vinyl format. The East Village store was a weekly addiction to numerous of the town’s top spinners.

Dancetracks is now resting its future solely on the web via its online store Dancetracks Digital, yet another wannabe in a wallowing in a sea of mediocre download sites. Unfortunately for Catling and the rest of Dancetrack’s staff, it appears that the digital version doesn’t have much blood pumping through its veins, and will probably go down in flames by the end of 2008. The biggest problem for many dance music download stores now operating is that they just don’t get it when it comes to the digital space.

Think we’re being harsh? Well, let me give you a single example, out of many, why they have not a clue. They make a user register before browsing/listening to their music. Let me repeat. THEY MAKE YOU REGISTER. That’s like Footlocker requiring that you take the time to give your full name, your address and other personal information before you can try on a pair of trainers. It’s idiotic. It’s insulting. And it’s bad business.

With cutting-edge technology company’s like Beatport, and savvy small shops like DanceRecords.com, you better step up your game if you want to play in the big leagues.
