Research In Motion Readies BBM Music – Social Networking Music Sharing Service

Research In Motion (RIM) has officially launched BBM Music, a new social networking music feature that utilizes the “cloud” to allow uses to share music with other BBM users for $5 per month. (We recently reported that RIM was negotiating with the major labels —Ed.)

BBM Music will offer millions of songs from the catalogs of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI.
“We have partnered with leading music companies to provide a ‘full track’ music sharing and discovery experience that will provide users with quality music on demand and allow them to connect with friends on a whole new level,” stated Mike Lazaridis, president and Co-CEO at Research In Motion.

The service allows users access to 50 songs that can be streamed or stored on their BlackBerry. Users can update their library by swapping up to 25 songs from their library with songs from their friends’ libraries.

The Future: Great idea, but $5 per month may be just too much money for access to only 50 songs at a time.
