SanDisk, Majors Announce New SD Card Format – slotMusic

SanDisk, EMI, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group and Sony BMG have announced a new album format, dubbed slotMusic, which will enable users to purchase complete record albums on a compact memory card.

SlotMusic will be officially unveiled in October at several prominent retail outlets including Amazon, Wal-Mart and Best Buy. The new format is a major coup for SanDisk who is providing their technology to the new format. Each card will not only feature the album tracks, but also some nice extras including album artwork and artist information. SlotMusic cards will play on newer mobile phones, PCs and some digital music players that contain a SD slot.

SanDisk will initially roll out 29 albums in the new format featuring Usher, Elvis, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke, Chris Brown, Akon, New Kids on the Block, Weezer and Leona Lewis. The music will be in the MP3 format (bit rate not officially announced –Ed.) and DRM free. Of course, the price of the new album format has not been reduced and will reportedly cost around 15 bucks.
