Amazon Now Number 2 Online Music Retailer

Amazon has officially climbed into the number 2 spot as an online digital music retailers. According to sales figures from the four major labels, Amazon’s MP3 store, which sells only non-DRM (Digital Rights Management) MP3 files, has become second to iTunes after only 6 months in business.

The majors have always wanted a strong competitor to iTunes and only after conceding to strip away DRM, have they been able to establish a viable alternative to Apple. With other initiatives underway, including one recently announced by Sony BMG, the music industry is striving to offer consumers other options to break Apple’s monopoly.
