MBL Announces 101 X-Treme Speakers

Looking like something out of a Terry Gilliam movie, German concern, MBL Akustikgerate GmbH has just announced specs on their new 101 X-treme audiophile speakers. Beneath the Jules Verne Steam Punk vibe, lies some serious technology that is sure to get deep-pocketed speaker junkies salivating.

The 101X uses two of MBL’s vibrating element omni-directional drivers from the 101E, one suspended and inverted above the other, mounted on a massive platform made from carbon fiber, aluminum, steel, acrylic, and wood. Deep bass is provided by a separate tower, which stands more than 6 feet tall and houses four proprietary 12″ subwoofers. The entire system requires roughly one month of build and test time.

The 101X system will reportedly cost $180,000 and be officially launched at CES. More information on the MBL 101 X-treme.
