USB 3.0 Spec Announced – Looks To Bump Speed To Almost 5 Gbps

The USB 3.0 Promoters Group, whose all-star lineup includes Microsoft, Intel, HP, TI, NEC, NXP Semiconductors and other playas, are set to release the USB 3.0 spec in the first half of 2008. The revamp will reportedly bump the data transfer rates by a factor of 10 by adding fiber-optic links alongside the traditional copper wires.

For backwards compatibility, the 3.0 will still retain the copper action, but the fiber will make the theoretical speed approach 5 Gbps. USB 3.0 products should likely arrive in late 2009 / early 2010.
