Universal’s DRM-Free Downloads Will Include Unique Identifiers

Universal Music Group has revealed that it will incorporate watermarks into its upcoming, DRM-free download “experiment.” Watermarks will be instituted to trace the download in case they wind up on a Peer-To-Peer (P2P) network, but personal information will not be included.

The Future: Although consumer privacy concerns will arise, Universal will counter that it is using the watermarking technology to gain a statistical analysis of the DRM-free experiment.
