eMusic Reaches 300,000 Subscribers

Demonstrates Accelerated Growth Curve

Independent online music retailer eMusic recently crossed the 300,000 subscriber mark, part of an accelerating growth curve for the concern who only recently announced 250,000 subscribers. The company offers a hybrid model supported both a subscription service and paid downloads.

The company is a distant number two ranking behind the Apple iTunes Store, which recently edged past the 2.5 billion download mark for comparison. eMusic has a completely different approach than Apple offering MP3 downloads from mostly independent labels. eMusic claims that it has 2.45 million songs in its catalog from 13,000 independent labels. eMusic is currently trying to court EMI, which recently shifted away from DRM-protected content and will be offering unprotected, yet high-quality, MP3 tracks on iTunes, a model that CEO Steve Jobs vehemently supports.

The announcement comes on the heels of a breakdown in talks between eMusic and Amazon over a possible buyout of the company.
