Vinylmania Shutters Its Last Location

The NYC Dance Music Institution For 30 Years Spins Its Last Record

An indicator of a troubled music retail scene, the DJ mecca could not sustain a presence, even in the over-DJ populated New York City. In the 70’s, several specialized Vinylmania stores lined Carmine Street in the West Village, but the only one left has now closed its doors.

“We affected a lot of people’s lives and I can safely say that a lot record collections that still exist in New York City were built out of this store,” said store owner Charlie Grappone.

The first Vinylmania store opened in 1978 and quickly grew with the exploding dance and punk scenes. However, with vinyl purchases way down and hard times for the music industry, the store just could not survive.
