Microsoft Announces PlayReady Mobile Multimedia Platform

Microsoft has now unveiled a new mobile DRM technology, dubbed PlayReady, at the 3GSM Conference in Barcelona that enables content sharing between a multitude of devices. The system is designed to facilitate the access of games, music, video, and other content across a number of handhelds.

Microsoft announced support from O2, Verizon Wireless, Bouygues Telecom, and Cingular Wireless. PlayReady is designed to support a range of consumption models and scenarios, including subscription, rental, pay-per-view, preview and super-distribution.
PlayReady is platform agnostic, and not tied to the just-launched Windows Mobile 6. Supported audio and video formats include Windows Media Audio (WMA), AAC/AAC+/HE-AAC, Windows Media Video (WMV), and H.264.
