Rick Rubin Pondering Co-Chair Of Columbia Position

Producer and American Recordings head-honcho Rick Rubin is considering an offer to become co-chairman of Columbia Records. He would run the label alongside current chairman Steve Barnett.

Last year Rubin produced two major hit albums: the Dixie Chicks’ “Taking the Long Way” and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Stadium Arcadium” for other labels. His own American Recordings label distributed by WMG had only moderate success with Tom Petty, Johnny Cash and the Vacation. American Recordings has several years left on it’s contract with WMG and it remains to be seen if Rubin can untangle himself to a post at Columbia where he had huge success with his early Def Jam releases.
