HD Radio Now In 50 Markets

The High Definition Radio Alliance announced that 22 additional markets in the United States are now broadcasting multicast (HD2) stations. The accelerated rollout brings the total number of HD2 markets to fifty, part of a larger plan to deliver channels across one-hundred top US markets. Multicast stations allow digital radio broadcasters to offer an additional channel across the same frequency.

“One of the most exciting things about HD Radio is the ability to offer innovative new content customized for each individual local market,” said Peter Ferrara, president and CEO of the HD Digital Radio Alliance. “Unlike any other audio entertainment source, radio is all about serving the local community and these new HD2 channels will do just that.”

The Future: Still relatively unknown in the US, HD Radio is just what the doctor ordered for stale, commercial radio fare. However, it’s going to be automotive industry that’s going to spur interest in the new digital stations by offering HD Digital Radios in current and upcoming models.
